- What inspired you to start a mobile sharpening service?
- I saw the need for people purchasing items at local markets but needing access to a good quality professional sharpening service.
- How did you get into the sharpening business?
- I am a second-generation sharpener, learning the craft from my father, who remembers neighborhood sharpeners coming through and sharpening everyone’s items back in the 1950s.
- What types of items do you sharpen?
- I sharpen knives, scissors, serrated knives, 30 different industries of scissors, lawn and garden tools, beauty shears, dog grooming shears, woodworking tools, and a full array of commercial food processing machinery blades.
- What makes your mobile service unique compared to traditional sharpening services?
- I go to the customer’s house or place of business and sharpen on-site, saving them from wrapping up their items and taking them somewhere to get sharpened. They get the convenience and comfort of staying in their own home or business.
- Can you share a memorable experience from your five seasons at the Backyard Market in Black Forest?
- Taking care of many local customers who come back repeatedly because they value the service and the benefits of having sharp blades.
- What are the benefits of having tools sharpened professionally?
- Professional sharpening gets the job done correctly, saving the customer time and money while making their tools safer. An excellent full-service sharpener can assess and sharpen according to the specific tool, giving customers peace of mind.
- How do you ensure the quality and precision of your sharpening?
- With over 30 years of experience, including significant time sharpening for restaurants and commercial customers, I am keenly aware of what sharpness is and how to attain it for each blade I sharpen.
- What is the most challenging item you’ve had to sharpen?
- A single-bevel Japanese sashimi knife.
- How do you handle special requests or unusual sharpening needs?
- These are handled on a case-by-case basis. Some items I may decline, while others I will inform the customer and apply my sharpening knowledge accordingly.
- What feedback have you received from your customers that you’re most proud of?
- The edges are better than new; they can feel the difference between sharp and dull, and they keep returning.
